Misc. Camping Trips

Here's some photos from various other backpacking and cabin trips Ellie and I have taken together.

High Peaks Wilderness, Northern Adirondacks, Keene, NY
7/23-8/2/2017
We met our friend Adam in the Adirondacks for Ma'Damie's first tent camping and backpacking trip!

Range View Cabin, Shenandoah NP, VA
4/28-5/1/2017
Took a quick weekend trip to SNP and stayed at the Range View Cabin just off of the Appalachian Trail in the northern part of the park.  Went on some nice hikes and checked out an old cemetery.

Dawson Cabin, Buchanan State Forest, PA
12/5-12/7/2016
A little over a month ago we adopted an incredible dog from the BARCS shelter in Baltimore and named her Ma'Damie. This was her first "camping" trip.  We figured one of the primitive PATC cabins would be a good start before we try a short backpacking trip in the spring.  Even though she's a twelve pound shih-tzu, she thinks she much larger and is all about hiking for miles!

Ellie made her a rain cape out of an old Frogg Toggs jacket.

We went for a 3 mile walk with a constant drizzle

All we need to do now is hem it up a little and make a hood.

It's all worth it for a nap in the down quilt

Hiking back down to the car
She slept like this for over half an hour on the way home!

Dolly Sods Wilderness, WV
6/13/16-6/16/16
A short shake-down trip before the Colorado Trail

5/23/16-5/25/16
A short backpacking trip with our friends Rich and Calum.

Paul Gerhard Memorial Shelter on the Tuscarora Trail
In the middle of the night a dog jumped in our shelter.  Turns out he had been lost for 3 days and was very excited to finally run into some people.

We had to change our itinerary and hike back out the way we came, but we got him back to his owner by the afternoon.

New Germany State Park, MD
2/22/16-2/24/16
A winter cabin trip for Ellie's birthday.   This was our first time to this park and we really loved being there in the winter.  We were to only people there and the newly renovated cabins seemed luxurious compared to the primitive PATC cabins we're used to renting.

Green Ridge State Forest, MD
9/28-9/31/15
A backpack trip around one of our favorite Maryland spots, Green Ridge, for Mike's birthday,

On the Pacific Crest Trail 4/17-7/6/2015

Salisbury Farm Life
October 2014-March 2015
For six months Ellie and I lived in a 24 foot travel trailer on Calliope Organic Farm in Salisbury Maryland.  We renovated, painted, and made the trailer a very comfortable home for ourselves.  Though it's not technically camping, we did use a composting toilet in lieu of a regular bathroom in the trailer, and were without running water because of sub-freezing temperatures for about 3 of the 6 months!  We also took a trip out to the Bear Spring Cabin (a PATC rental off of the Appalachian Trail) for Ellie's birthday.

The hardest stencil ever!

Ellie did an amazing job painting the bathroom with masking tape and various old acrylics from my parents house.

Two fruits of our labor- a combination composting toilet/sawdust bin, and a framed floor we built out of reclaimed wood from the horse barn.

We also built this wall to make a "bathroom" in which to put the composting toilet

Green Ridge State Forest
7/4-7/7/2014
After a few days in the city without power from a summertime derecho, we decided our time would be better spent in the woods.  When isn't it?

Bear Spring Cabin, Burkittsville, MD
2/23-2/25/2014
PATC cabin trip for Ellie's birthday

On the Appalachian Trail 7/3-11/14/2013

Dolly Sods Wilderness, WV
4/20-4/23/2013
Shake-down hike for our Appalachian Trail thru attempt.  Also, a great way to collect and consume wild ramps!

Sugar Knob Cabin, George Washington National Forest, VA
2/16-2/19/2013
This cabin is another PATC rental.  When we went in the wintertime, it takes a six mile hike to reach the cabin.  It was originally built and used by rangers.  It's only 10 feet squared, but cozy and easy to keep warm with the tiny cast iron stove.

Big Schloss on the ridge of Great North Mountain

Icy Wolf Gap on the way home.

Olive Green Cabin, Cunningham Falls State Park, MD
1/19-1/21/13
A PATC cabin in the Catoctin Range outside of Frederick.  Olive Green is the name of the last woman who lived there who raised 7 children in the house.

George Washington National Forest, VA
10/19-10/21/2012
A short backpacking trip over Tibbet Knob and around Trout Pond. The fall colors on Great North Mountain were spectacular.

 Green Ridge State Forest, MD
9/28-9/30/2012

A car camping trip for Mike's birthday.
